Stead, R. (2010). When You Reach Me. Yearling Newbery. New York, NY.

1979 in New York as twelve-year old Miranda and her friends explore their neighborhood, and figure out how to maneuver them around about the neighborhood. Miranda has had the same best friends since she was a baby. Her best friend, Sal, lives in the same building just downstairs of the same building her and her mom live in. Sal stop coming by when he was punched by a bigger boy at the streets.

Miranda comes across some notes she finds in odd places, like her coat pocket or bag of bread. At first she gets scared but then becomes intrigue and determined to find where they are coming from. It seems to be someone that can tell the future. The notes tell her what will happen before it happens.  The next note tells Miranda to start writing a story. This confuses her for she does not know what to make of such request. One day as Miranda was walking home she spots the boy who hit Sal and notice that he is trying to talk to him but Sal wants nothing with him and runs toward the traffic. He is about to get hit by a car when a homeless man pushes him out of the way and saves his life. Miranda picks up the man lost shoe and finds the fourth note in the shoe. The shoes are from her apartment. Soon Miranda discover that the homeless man is one of her friends that has turned to a time traveler who’s mind has being affected because of too much time travel.
